My first Baseball hero when I was a kid ! I am 51 years young and still shed a tear when I think about that terrible New Year’s Day in 1973… what a man, what a Baseball Player and what an incredible, positive example he set for generations of Fans everywhere who had the privilege of seeing #21 play in person or read about his many accomplishments. R.I.P. Roberto…

I visit Pittsburgh twice a year and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I cross 6th Street Bridge( the Roberto Clemente Bridge ) and always touch his number on the statue…

If I had to idolize any human being, besides God and my parents, I would idolize this great human being from Carolina, PR…..Roberto Clemente. Everytime I remember that sad date (12/31/1972)….tears run down from my eyes. Knowing the fact that Puerto Rico lost not just a native hero, but lost a humanitarian. Que en Paz Descanse nuestro Astro Boricua que estara en los corazones de todo Puerto Rico y de America Latina. QUE VIVA REOBERTO!!!!!

loved him since I saw him at Forbes Field as a kid…….Pirates have never been the same since.

Sadly Clemente died well before I was born, but I grew up in the Burgh and have always been a diehard Buccos fan and Clemente has always been an idol of mine. A true class act who was underated on the field and a true humanitarian off it. How many people out there would spend their New Years Eve taking relief supplies to Nicaragua? Not too many of us. Ariba Roberto!

I’ve been a baseball fan since 1965 (I was 7) and, to this day, Clemente is the best all-around player I’ve ever seen. On the field, he had no weaknesses. I still have yet to see an outfield arm that could match his. In 1980, Baseball Digest rated him second, only to DiMaggio, in all-around talent in Major League history. Had he played his career in New York or Los Angeles, he’d have gotten the publicity and recognition he deserved.

Also, I noticed that alot of the people in your list were from the steroid era. JOKE.

Watch more Clemente highlight reels. You’d be impressed. Either that, or you hate Pittsburgh and need to STFU, lol

He put on a clinic in the 71 series–Orioles manager Weaver asked reporters–”Does Clemente always play like that?Rest in peace as we remember you-your career and your life on this day.The day you left us.”Aribba Bobby!!

  17. ekimfloom

he showed that during the ‘71 series…one of the first I remember watching….Clemente proving himself to the world, Steve Blass actually finding home plate…etc….

although he was puerto rican us nicaraguans see him as a hero

  19. roscoegino

@tatomuck18 you have to leave room for bias because there are many pirate fans and puerto rican baseball fans who hold roberto close to their hearts. sometimes “best” and “favorite” are substituted for one another. so what? roberto was more than just a baseball player anyway.

  20. roscoegino

@ekimfloom and he could run like hell up until the time he died too. i was surprised to see that he wasn’t much of base stealer because he was a good base runner.

  21. ekimfloom

well, yes, it was…a bullett every time, scared the hell out of third base coaches and intimidated other runners….and he threw that well up until the time he died….

  22. FrsBigeasy

I said 1 of the best not the best Player of All Time.

Having been born & raised in Pittsburgh in the late 50’s, as a child, Roberto Clemente was my very first sports hero. To this very day, at the age of 53, the memory of Roberto remains a very signicant part of my life. In my home here in the Orlando, Florida area, I have an entire room decked out in Pittsburgh sports memorabilia. Included amongst my treasures are 2 large photos of Roberto, one of which is a framed, “special edition” Wheaties box cover, which I consider priceless. God bless #21!
